07. NOT JUST FLOWERS.

sometimes, what isn’t there matters too.

When people look at an arrangement, they naturally see the flowers…

The rose.
The hydrangea.
The lily.
The little things filling the spaces between.

But when I look at one, I see something slightly different…

I see where the eye begins.
Where it travels.
Where it should stop.

I see height, proportion, colour and movement…
I see the space between one flower and another.

space is part of the arrangement too.

Because floristry isn’t simply about putting more flowers into an arrangement…

Sometimes another stem makes it better.
Sometimes removing one does.

A flower needs room to be seen.
A line needs somewhere to travel…
And an arrangement needs space to breathe.

Perhaps that is one of the hardest things to explain about floral design.

More isn’t always more.

After years of working with flowers, you begin to understand that an arrangement isn’t finished when there is nothing left to add…

Sometimes it is finished when there is finally nothing left to take away.

leave a little room for the flowers to speak.
